Romeo & Juliet Too Ambitious, Baffling

In the Theater and Dance Department's production of The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet this past weekend the phrase "profundity for profundity's sake" sprang most often to this lay reviewer's mind. How lovely, how beautiful, how sublime and how soothing this production would have appeared to a temperament more artistic than mine! Over every pointed critique of modern culture, over every exaltation of Shakespeare's longevity, and over every grand post-modernist movement would my heart have reeled! But alas, alack, and damn it all - for all of Romeo and Juliet's high value in technical execution, the performance did little to satisfy what the average theatergoer truly craves: artistic cogency.
