On the evening of Saturday, Oct. 11, a Trinity College student was seriously injured at Tropical, a party hosted annually by Psi Upsilon (Psi U). According to a campus-wide e-mail sent on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2:53 a.m. by Dean of Students Frederick Alford immediately following the incident, "The details of the accident are unconfirmed but it appears that he injured himself diving into a makeshift pool." The Hartford Courant reported on Monday, Oct. 13, "A Trinity College student remained in Hartford Hospital today." The article also explained, citing College spokeswoman Michele Jacklin as its source, "The decorations for the party included a two to three-foot-deep hole dug into the ground and filled with water [...] The student was seriously injured when he dove into it."

Of the incident, President James F. Jones, Jr. shared, "What happened over the weekend was every parent's nightmare, every dean's nightmare, and every president's nightmare."

In his e-mail, Alford stated, "I also want to thank the members of Campus Safety, the ambulance and fire department, and especially TCERT and David Andres who administered life-saving emergency response measures. We all owe them a debt of gratitude." President Jones echoed this sentiment: "Campus Safety and TCERT did an incredible job and this is an excellent example of why knowing what to do in an emergency can have consequences that you never think about when you are doing the training [...] David Andres saved our student's life because he knew what to do and had the right personnel there."
